The Rumors Are True (R.A.T.) was the title of a two person exhibition of Megan Hildebrandt's work and my own. It was shown the Creative Alliance at the Patterson and culminated both of our residencies there. We were both speaking (and lying) about the neighborhood we lived in, Highlandtown, an East Baltimore gem settled first by Eastern Europeans a hundred or so years ago, and now populated by new immigrants from Central and South America. For my part, I imagined history as a spiral, rebuilding the historic rowhouses out of the stone blocks that built Machu Picchu, rearranging the many cultural influences and their chronology, from memory and from transferred black and white photographs in my studio. Meanwhile, Megan was dressed up like a 1940's housewife, schlepping around a water bucket and cans of Bon Ami and scrubbing people's steps for them every Saturday morning, much to their historically accurate delight and/or dismay.
